Sun Bowl Preview

On December 31, 2012 at 2 PM, Georgia Tech and Southern Cal are set to play the Hyundai Sun Bowl. If you look at my bowl picks, or if you know anything about me, you will know that I have Georgia Tech winning this game. Earlier this week, the two teams were supposed to meat for the Sun Bowl Dinner. Lane Kiffin, being the classless coach that he is however, decided that he would wait over an hour to bring his team to this dinner. Of course, this really ticked off Paul Johnson and the Georgia Tech players. In addition to Georgia Tech being mad about this, I'm not sure that USC will be motivated enough to actually try to win this game. USC was the preseason favorite to win the National Championship and ended up 7-5 in a bowl that they could care less about. Because of these two things, I do not really see a way that Georgia Tech will lose this game. USC entered in as a 10 point favorite. However, since Matt Barkley was ruled out, that point differential has gone down to 7.5.

Key Player for Georgia Tech: Jemea Thomas

Jemea Thomas is not a very well known player. He plays free safety for Georgia Tech and gets the unfortunate assignment of getting to cover both Robert Woods and Marqise Lee, arguably the best WR tandem in college football. The reason why Jemea Thomas is the key player for Georgia Tech is his ability to show up in the big games. In Georgia Tech's upset of #5 Clemson and Thomas' first career start, he had two interceptions and a forced fumble. In addition to this, he also had this amazing interception against Florida State in the ACC Championship Game. If Jemea Thomas can have another big game and shut down USC's passing attack, in addition to getting some help from our pass-rushers, it will be a long day for Lane Kiffin and the Trojans.

Key Player for USC: Max Wittek

Most people know Max Wittek as the person who guaranteed a win over top-ranked Notre Dame earlier this season. Wittek will again be filling in for Matt Barkley as he continues to heal his shoulder before the NFL Draft in April. Max Wittek did not perform terribly in this game (14/23 with 186 yds. and a TD) against one of the best defenses in the league. If he can get off to a hot start and take advantage of Tech's sub-par defense, it may be a long day for my Yellow Jackets.

Key Match-up: Silas Redd vs. GT's rushing Defense

Silas Redd transferred to USC from Penn State after the Jerry Sandusky debacle. He has had quite the season for USC rushing for 817 yds and 9 TDs. He should be a tough test for a Georgia Tech defense that has not exactly looked magnificent this season against good running backs (see Giovani Bernard and Gur-shall). In my opinion, however, since the firing of GT's defensive coordinator Al Groh, the rushing defense has since improved somewhat. I think that whoever wins the battle will very likely win the game.

3 Bold Predictions:
1. USC will not score a touchdown in the first half
2. Jemea Thomas will pick off Max Wittek twice
3. Tevin Washington will throw 2 touchdowns and run for another and be named Sun Bowl MVP

Final Prediction:

GT: 42
USC: 20

Like I said at the beginning, USC could absolutely care less about playing in this bowl game, and I doubt anybody on that team is actually taking this game seriously. Because of this and USC's average-at-best rushing defense, I think this one will get out of hand early for USC.

It's the End of the World as we Know It

And I feel fine. If you are reading this, then that means the world in fact did  not end as the Mayans "predicted." I put that in quotes simply because I don't think that the Mayans actually predicted that today would be the end of the world. Take the Mayan calender as a clue to that. Have you ever actually seen that (http://www.google.com/imgres?um=1&hl=en&sa=N&tbo=d&rlz=1C1SKPM_enUS451US451&biw=1366&bih=667&tbm=isch&tbnid=ipidwUXWKIV7CM:&imgrefurl=http://bostinno.com/2012/12/11/mayan-calendar-end-of-the-world-december-21-2012/&docid=2cP-SecEHuHfbM&imgurl=http://cloudfront2.bostinno.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Mayan-Calendar.jpeg&w=1024&h=768&ei=bmjUUNPjO5O68wTf8YDYDA&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=140&vpy=362&dur=11&hovh=194&hovw=259&tx=153&ty=96&sig=100469568682862204057&page=1&tbnh=146&tbnw=199&start=0&ndsp=20&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:0,i:160). I think the reason the calender itself ended is that it ran out of room for more. In addition to that, the Mayans did not account for leap years, so according to the Mayans, the world should have ended a couple of months ago. In Matthew 24: 36, Jesus clearly says, "But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even angels or heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. Matthew 24:36 ESV." I think that pretty much sums up what I think about all these people predicting the end of the world. Jesus clearly said that "no one knows." Because of this, I believe that we as humans should stop trying to guess when the world is going to end and live our lives to the fullest because we are not guaranteed tomorrow. I don't mean that as to go do a bunch of stupid stuff because you only live once. I mean that you should live each day to the fullest.

2012-2013 NCAA Bowl Picks

Time for my first non-introduction blog post. I have chosen to participate in ESPN's Bowl Mania. On this post, you will find my selections for the winners in addition to an explanation for the winners of the BCS Bowl games. My picks will be BOLDED AND IN ALL CAPS.

New Mexico Bowl: Nevada vs. ARIZONA

Idaho Potato Bowl: Toledo vs. UTAH ST.

Poinsettia Bowl: BRIGHAM YOUNG vs. San Diego St.

St. Petersburg Bowl: BALL ST. vs. UCF

New Orleans Bowl: East Carolina vs. LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE

Las Vegas Bowl: Washington vs. BOISE ST.

Hawaii Bowl: FRESNO ST. vs. Southern Methodist

Little Caesar's Bowl: WESTERN KENTUCKY vs. Central Michigan

Military Bowl: SAN JOSE ST. vs. Bowling Green

Belk Bowl: CINCINNATI vs. Duke

Holiday Bowl: BAYLOR vs. UCLA

Independence Bowl: OHIO vs. Louisiana-Monroe

Russell Athletic Bowl: RUTGERS vs. Virginia Tech

Texas Bowl: Minnesota vs. TEXAS TECH

Armed Forces Bowl: RICE vs. Air Force

Pinstripe Bowl: WEST VIRGINIA vs. Syracuse

Fight Hunger Bowl: Navy vs. ARIZONA ST.

Alamo Bowl: Texas vs. OREGON ST.

Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl: TCU vs. Michigan St.

Music City Bowl: NC State vs. VANDERBILT

Sun Bowl: USC vs. GEORGIA TECH
NOTE: No one should be surprised by this pick at all. Other than this pick, all of these are chosen from a non-biased point-of-view.

Liberty Bowl: IOWA ST. vs. Tulsa

Chick-fil-A Bowl: LSU vs. Clemson

Gator Bowl: MISSISSIPPI ST. vs. Northwestern

Heart of Dallas Bowl: PURDUE vs. Oklahoma St.

Outback Bowl: SOUTH CAROLINA vs. Michigan

Capital One Bowl: GEORGIA vs. Nebraska

Rose Bowl: Wisconsin vs. STANFORD
I don't think Stanford will have any problem with Wisconsin or Montee Ball. In case you didn't notice this, Stanford's defense is A LOT better than Nebraska's and Kevin Hogan is playing really well right now.

Orange Bowl: Northern Illinois vs. FLORIDA ST.
I'm one of the few people who think that this well be a fairly close game. FSU will have some trouble containing Jordan Lynch of Northern Illinois, but ultimately FSU has way too much talent to lose this game (especially after almost blowing it against GT in the ACC Championship)

Sugar Bowl: Louisville vs. FLORIDA
Again, I think this game will be fairly close and that Teddy Bridgewater will cause some problems for the Florida Defense. The only problem with Bridgewater, however, is that he is the only real player on this Louisville team and as soon as Florida finds an answer for him, they will have no problem winning this game.

Fiesta Bowl: OREGON vs. Kansas St.
Other than the National Championship, this is probably the best bowl game this season. Earlier in the season, many people considered this to be a potential BCS Championship match-up. Kansas State's defense did not have an answer to Baylor's fast paced spread offense and I don't think they will have an answer for Oregon's offense either.

Cotton Bowl: TEXAS A&M vs. Oklahoma

Compass Bowl: PITTSBURGH vs. Ole Miss

GoDaddy.com Bowl: KENT ST. vs. Arkansas St.

BCS National Championship: Notre Dame vs. ALABAMA
These are not the two teams that people expected to play in this game this year. I'm pretty sure the only person who thought Notre Dame was going to be here was Lou Holtz. Anyway, after watching Alabama's rushing offense simply tear up Georgia's defense in the SEC championship, I see absolutely no way that Notre Dame will be able to stop it either. Notre Dame's only hope will be if they are able to find a way to get the ball into the hands of their best playmaker Tyler Eifert. Unfortunately for Notre Dame, Alabama has a couple of players that, in my opinion, match up very well with Eifert in Nico Johnson and Casey Mosley. I think that those two will do a good job at containing Eifert and that Alabama wins this game 21-3.

Thank you for taking the time to read this blog and expect to see my first mock draft up probably on Saturday.

God Bless!

A little bit about myself and this blog

Welcome to my first ever blog post. In this blog, I will tell you a little bit about myself and also what you can expect to find on this blog.

My name is Ben Tankersley (which you probably already know if you are here). I am 18 years old and a student at the University of North Georgia majoring in Computer Science. I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do with that degree yet, but I will take the time to figure that out later. I have been a Christian ever since I was 7 years old and have only grown to love God more each and every day. God deserves all credit for everything I have ever achieved. If it were not for Him, I would be completely lost. I love football (both pro and college) and baseball (only pro). My favorite teams are the Atlanta Braves, the Atlanta Falcons, and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (go ahead and hate if you want to but I don't care). A lot of people wonder why I choose to cheer for Georgia Tech even though UGA usually beats GT in football year after year. There is really a simple answer to that: my parents met at Georgia Tech. So if it were not for Georgia Tech, I would not be here, and I figure that is reason enough to give Georgia Tech football my support. I also love a wide variety of music ranging from Classic Rock to Blues to Christian to Country even to Classical. My favorite bands are the Beatles, Queen, Pink Floyd, Billy Joel, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, Third Day, and Big and Rich. As a band geek throughout middle and high school I have become a fan of various composers including Gustav Holst, Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Giuseppe Verdi, and Gioachino Rossini. My favorite pieces of classical music include the First and Second Suites by Holst, March Slav by Tchaikovsky, La Forza del Destino Overture by Verdi, and the Barber of Seville Overture by Rossini.

On this blog you should expect to see my occasional rant about America, my opinions on sports and sports transactions, my nfl mock draft, my NFL and NCAAF weekly picks, and whatever else I decide to write about. I hope that you enjoy reading my blog. If you have any comments, questions, or something you would like for me to write about please don't hesitate to e-mail me at bat082994@gmail.com. Thank you and God bless.
